Founded by John Maguire and Gareth Nichols with the ethos of ‘work hard, help people and they will come’, Pontefract Dental Care has been operating in Pontefract for the past 3 years and has recently moved to new premises closer to the town centre.
The pair were in the same year at Leeds University, where they both studied dentistry, and qualified in 2006. From there, they went on to work as associate dentists at other practices and became foundation dentist trainers, training newly qualified dentists after they left dental school. John went on to spend 11 years working at Armstrong and Haire in Castleford and Gareth worked for 10 years at Innes Practice in Haxby, York. However, they both shared an ambition to open their own practice one day.
“We have always enjoyed coming to the many pubs in Pontefract and there has always been a buzz in the town centre, particularly on market days. However, buying a dental practice is now extremely competitive. After losing out to bigger dental corporates on other practices in the Yorkshire area, such as Bupa, we finally bought ‘Ellis Dental Practice Pontefract’ in 2017.”
However, the original practice was in a tired building with relatively old surgeries and equipment, no disabled access and limited space. Although some initial decoration and improvements were made, it was their goal to find a better location and to build a brand-new modern practice. Despite numerous difficulties in finding suitable space, they are now situated in the town centre with 3 bright and fresh new surgeries and ground floor disabled access.
The property, which had previously stood unoccupied, has undergone extensive internal and external renovations and was even nominated for a design award as a result. The pair have also been keen to incorporate the history of Pontefract within the practice and decided to include the image of a castle within their logo as a nod to the town’s past.
Having spent the last 4 years studying to gain an MSc in Endodontics (root canal treatment), John now specialises in root canal treatment and accepts referrals from other dentists to the practice whilst Gareth provides a lot of their cosmetic dentistry, including composite bonding and veneers. Claire Goodall, who joined the practice in 2018 having previously worked at practices in Durham and Wakefield, provides Invisalign treatments and facial aesthetic treatments, including anti-wrinkle injections.
The practice provides all general dental procedures including hygiene, tooth whitening, Invisalign and implants and offers evening and weekend appointments, interest free finance and an online appointment booking facility.
